Global Semiconductor Wafer Market Booms in 2026 Driven by AI and Automotive Demand with Continuous Capacity Expansion and Price Hikes

2026 06/15

June 15, 2026 — The global semiconductor wafer industry is witnessing robust growth and profound structural changes in 2026, fueled by surging demand for AI high-performance computing (HPC), automotive electronics and industrial control applications, alongside widespread capacity expansion and successive price adjustments across major manufacturers. Latest industry data and corporate developments signal a strong market rebound and sustained tight supply throughout the year.
According to the quarterly report released by the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) on April 29, global silicon wafer shipments reached 3,275 million square inches (MSI) in the first quarter of 2026, marking a 13.1% year-on-year increase. Although shipments recorded a mild 4.7% quarter-over-quarter decline due to seasonal factors, the overall market demand maintained a strong upward trajectory compared with the same period of the previous year, laying a solid foundation for the full-year industry growth.
Market demand diversification has become a core driver of the industry’s prosperity. Doris Hsu, Chairperson of GlobalWafers, pointed out at the company’s 2026 shareholder meeting in late May that the global semiconductor silicon wafer market has achieved a notable recovery this year. Beyond the persistent strong demand for AI and HPC chips, downstream demand from automotive electronics, industrial control, energy and power grid sectors has also staged a steady recovery, forming a multi-dimensional growth momentum for the wafer market.
Driven by booming market demand, global leading wafer manufacturers have launched round-after-round price adjustments since the start of 2026. Shin-Etsu Chemical, SUMCO and GlobalWafers, the world’s top three silicon wafer suppliers, initiated the second round of price hikes in May. Industry statistics show that the cumulative price increase of mainstream silicon wafers has exceeded 15% year-to-date, while high-end wafers dedicated to AI and HPC scenarios have seen a more prominent rise of 18% to 22%. GlobalWafers confirmed that it is actively negotiating with downstream clients for further price increases in the second half of 2026, aiming to offset rising costs of raw materials, energy, transportation and continuous depreciation expenses from ongoing capacity expansion projects.
Capacity expansion has accelerated worldwide to ease the persistent supply shortage. European wafer manufacturer Okmetic announced that its fab expansion project in Vantaa officially entered mass production in early 2026, effectively boosting its production capacity for 150mm to 200mm wafers and enhancing its supply capacity to meet the growing global market demand. In China, the 12-inch SOI wafer R&D and industrialization project of Shanghai Hecrystal in Zhengzhou was officially put into operation in June 2026. The project is constructed in three phases and is expected to reach an annual production capacity of 216,000 wafers upon full completion, further supplementing the global supply of high-end 12-inch wafers.
SEMI’s industry forecast indicates that global monthly production capacity of 12-inch wafer fabs will hit a record high of 9.6 million wafers in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate of 8% from 2022 to 2026. The rapid expansion of 12-inch wafer capacity has become a key pillar supporting the upgrading of advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes and the mass production of AI chips.
Technological innovation continues to empower industrial upgrading. In late May 2026, Imec and EV Group jointly demonstrated a breakthrough wafer-to-wafer hybrid bonding technology, achieving an ultra-fine interconnect pitch of 200nm and record-high overlay accuracy. This cutting-edge technology provides critical technical support for the mass production of next-generation advanced semiconductor devices and 3D packaging products, opening up new development space for high-end wafer application scenarios.
Industry analysts predict that the global semiconductor wafer market will maintain a tight supply pattern in the second half of 2026. Sustained growth in AI computing power construction, intelligent vehicle penetration and industrial digital transformation will continue to drive wafer demand. Meanwhile, ongoing capacity investment and technological iteration will further optimize the industry supply structure, promoting the sustained and high-quality development of the global semiconductor wafer sector.
